How do we become an employer of choice?
Make It Stand Out.
I have often seen organisations recruiting or affirming they are like a family. I have never been a fan of this statement, because it may sound nice, but actually trying to run a business as a family will hold you back and may even backfire.
Some aspects of family - like culture are important to an organisation, caring, a sense of belonging or even respect to others if you do not like them! But in reality a Leader will never treat the employees as children. So using this terminology may sound like paternalistic leadership in some ways.
It can also be counterproductive when you want to let go people due to restructure, there will inevitably come a time you will have to terminate some employees' employment. It may sound hypocrital and not really like a family.
Most importantly you want to be a leader where you set goals and fulfil higher purpose, through performance, developments, innovation. You would expect to exchange a fair set of values amongst your employees. Today's employees want to be part of an organisation where they can be trusted, empowered and involved. They do not want a paternalistic leader to tell them what to do.
Be conscious of your audience and what they want. Be more like a sports team or joining a journey together or a community of people to bring innovations. This is far more attractive for your employees.
Bring innovations to your HR strategies to support your Leaders through those changes and stand out from the crowd!
